Finn spotted Amelia as soon as he pulled into Marc’s driveway. She was outside near the back of the house at the edge of the vineyard talking with a man in a plaid shirt and straw hat. Her long blonde hair flowed over the shoulders of her fashionable khaki jumpsuit, and her ankle boots gave her a touch of rugged elegance as she glanced toward her visitors with a radiant smile. Finn parked the car, but even from that distance, there was a glimmer in her eye that seemed to transport him back to when they had played in the fields so many years earlier.

Sarah seemed to pick up on his distraction. “She’s pretty, isn’t she?”

“I suppose so.” Finn glanced away and shut off the car.

“She’s awfully happy to see you.”

“Look,” Finn said, “you don’t have anything to worry about.”

“Don’t I?”

“No.”

“That makes me feel better.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“Say whatever you want.”

“Please…” Finn said softly as he reached over and held Sarah’s hand. “You’re my angel.”

She looked into his eyes. “Am I? You should remember that I can see your aura. You had the same bright colors when you were with her yesterday at the ruins.”

He had forgotten that it was impossible to hide his feelings from an empath. “What bright colors am I?”

Sarah seemed to study his outline. “Reds and blues. There’s a lot going on in that head of yours right now.”

“She’s just an old friend.”

She narrowed her eyes at him and nodded. “I believe you.”

Stepping out of the car, Amelia had already started toward them. Her smile seemed to radiate in the cool, California sunshine. A window at the side of the house was open and classical music gently filled the air. Something from Mozart? A plow moved along one row in the vineyard followed by two workers, who started and stopped every few seconds as if to test the fruits of their labor.

Finn swept his arm around Sarah’s waist and pulled her closer. She would need a little extra assurance that he wasn’t about to run off with an old flame—wasn’t even thinking about it, which was the truth. She could see his aura, yes, but thank God she couldn’t read his mind.

Finn waited until Amelia had almost reached them before speaking. “Sorry for the short notice.”

Amelia made a wide gesture as if to embrace them both at the same time. “No worries. I’m so happy you could stop by again.”

Breaking away from Sarah a moment before Amelia embraced him, he couldn’t help but feel the joy of reuniting with his old friend. A wave of sadness passed through him until he retreated to Sarah’s side a few seconds later. Amelia was only trying to comfort him, but he could feel Sarah’s stare burning a hole into his back and there was no need to make it more awkward than it had to be.

Amelia then hugged Sarah, pulling away with an expression of concern. “Are you feeling better?”

Sarah seemed confused for a moment before nodding.
